The Atlantic Social Lab (ASL) has commissioned this report to use the conclusions of existing ASL Partners’ reports to generate benchmarks of good practice in the Atlantic Area territories (regions of Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland, and the UK).

This report has been prepared by Danson Associates & the GCU team. Fiona Henderson & Geoff Whittam in the organisation team, Iain Campbell, Michael Danson, Fiona Henderson and Geoff Whittam for the analysis of the data and document drafting, and finally Geoff Whittam, Fiona Henderson and Project Partners for the revision of fthe content.

The Social Technology Project was recently launched and involves an exciting new student-led programme that helps schools to explore solutions to social issues through the use of technology. The new programme aims to develop and promote creative thinking around local social issues for young people which will then be transferred into a app or game. The project has been launched this week by Enterprise North West in partnership with Lisneal College and Kippie CIC.

The Atlantic Social Lab, SIKE Honest Conversations Series & SENScot Present: "Sustaining a favourable climate for Scotland’s Social Enterprise sector"

Scotland’s Social Enterprise Strategy 2016-2026 was launched in December 2016. The Strategy presents ongoing commitment to supporting the social enterprise sector, and complements other key Scottish Government policy commitments to a fairer society and inclusive economy.

The Atlantic Social Lab partnership has concluded the report “Social innovation pilot actions in the Atlantic Area: a proposal for monitoring impacts”.

This document suggests an evaluation method for social innovation initiatives. Pilot actions implemented in 2018 and 2019 by the project partners were used as an empirical material to perform this type of assessment. The study was organized by the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra with information provided by the project partners.

It is being run in collaboration with SIKE (Social Innovation Knowledge Exchange, an Erasmus+ project), the University of Stirling, and a third sector organisation, Scottish Care.

The Homeless Shelter is a resource that helps to transform the circumstances of the residents in the Asturias Region who have faced barriers in their lives. These installations are owned by the Avilés Municipality and operated and managed by Grupo 5 and works directly with the residents of the region to create new approaches in addressing the most fundamental needs of the homeless population. Among other activities and resources, they try to provide shelter to as many individuals as possible.

This study visit report has been elaborated by Fábio Sampaio and Hugo Pinto from Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra.

The Cultural Factory is a multidisciplinary arts centre, located in the building of a former shirt factory, built in 1950, for the development of the textile industry. It was in 2007 that the works of the Cultural Factory began to open its doors, depending on the Avilés Municipal Culture Foundation, which gives it its annual operating budget. The primary objective of the Culture Factory is to bring the entire population of the region of Avilés closer to the culture of both the region and Asturias. This non-profit public organization has as its target audience children, youth, adults, the elderly, people with learning disabilities and people with disabilities. It should be noted that there is great work being done on the part of the Factory in bringing people with disabilities closer to culture in order to achieve greater socialization of these individuals in society.

As part of the Atlantic Social Lab, Enterprise North West organized and facilitated a group of social change actors and influencers to attend the conference and to partake in the overall session as well as the workshop sessions during the days. This group represented the only attendees from the North West of NI.

Agenda of the event: 7th Coordination meeting and study visits in Avilés (Asturias). (12th-13th September 2019)

The workshop titled "SOCIAL INNOVATION AND THE ROLE OF STATE" was held in the afternoon of May 9, in room 1 of CES Alta in Coimbra. It was attended by about 50 people, including keynote speakers, who represented organizations of the quadruple helix, such as, governance bodies, universities, companies or third sector organisations.

The main objectives of the workshop were sharing knowledge about social innovation; exploring the impact of social innovation initiatives in Europe; discussing the link between social innovation, State and public management; promoting social innovation as a driving force for a new and improved public management; presenting the ASL project main results and promote networking and cooperation for future projects of social innovation.

The Final report document has been prepared by Carla Nogueira, Hugo Pinto, Ana Filipa Sá & Fábio Sampaio in the framework of WP6 Atlantic Social Innovation .Observatory.
